Florida’s Serious Unemployment Problem

Just a few days ago it was reported that Florida’s unemployment fund was completely used up back in August. Many thousands of Floridians receiving unemployment would have lost had it not been for a $600 million loan from the federal government.

If these people were to stop receiving their unemployment many of them would find themselves in a very difficult financial position. Here in Florida there are almost no jobs and on top of that we have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Our ‘reported’ unemployment rate is over 12%, but the real unemployment rate is closer to 20%. With so many people out of work the food banks here have been struggling to keep up with the increased demand, adding another few hundred thousand people to those the food banks already serve would certainly overwhelm their resources.

If the nation and the state’s economy continue to deteriorate which is almost a certainty then we will see many people starve in this country. A few months ago Dmitry Lyskov of the Pravda news service reported that seven million Americans died during the Great Depression. Considering our country is going into a deeper depression than that of the 1930’s and that our country’s population is more than twice what it was at that time then the possibility of 10 million Americans or more dying in this depression is very likely.

This country is going to have a food crisis the question is how many people will starve because of it? Probably the single best thing Americans can do right now is to learn about wild edibles. A few months ago I wrote an article titled, “The World of Wild Edibles” in it I cite several videos and books which will put you well on your way to learning about the subject.
